This year, the University of Chicago was thrilled to welcome Puerto Rican ensemble Plena Libre as the Don Michael Randel Ensemble-in-Residence, the first Latin music ensemble to hold the position. The GRAMMY-nominated band shared its high-energy music in a performance with the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, participated in conversations on the role of music in politics, and got the community moving in dance workshops with local plena and bomba dance instructor Ivelisse Diaz.

At UChicago Presents, we were gearing up to present Plena Libre this spring in a main-stage concert in Mandel Hall. Unfortunately, that concert could not go on as planned, but we are pleased to share that plans are underway to bring Plena Libre back in 2021!

Enjoy an exclusive video performance recorded with the band during the first part of the Residency.
